Website planning

Colours:

The colours of my website are to match my music video, meaning that I will be using soft pastel colours, warm tones, and some blue.

Pictures: these are my favourite pictures that I have taken. I Will be incorporating them into my website.

Cover images:
I have done two versions of the album cover to display on my website.

Option 1:

Option 2:

In the end, I have decided to go with option 2, as it looks more professional.

Intertextuality:

'Somnambulist' - this is a reference to 1920's film 'The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari'. The somnambulist is the main focus of the movie.

'Love of my life' - Title of the famous song by Queen - 'Love of my life'.

Labels:

Universal and Asterwerks logos positioned on the footline of the website.

Video Planning

Setting:

Hyde Park - The park has lovely arches covered with leaves and flowers which I think will match the costumes and the theme.

The Thames Path - The Thames Path on a sunny day is a great place to record since the cool colours contrast the warm pinks of the costumes.

The BFI Southbank - The top of the BFI building has a rooftop garden. It's generally quiet as not many people go there, so it's a great place to record some of the shots. There is also a view on the London eye and a bridge.

Angel station - I chose to record inside the angel station in order to use the station sign as a semiotic. I will need to obtain a permission to record there.

Café Nero - I have chosen to record in the café Nero in Southbank. The cafe is cozy, which is what I am looking for. It is also near BFI, which is where I recorded remaining footage.

Costumes:

The artist: I want the artist to wear soft and warm toned colours such as pastels and pinks. I also want the artist to wear dress for the emphasis of femininity.

The remaining actors: The other two actors who will be helping me, will be wearing black and more masculine clothing such as shits or hoodies and trousers. This is to contrast the artist and the idea of girls having to be feminine.

There will be no need for props.

Intertextuality: I have planned a shot, where the actors recreate the famous scene from the 1977 movie 'Titanic'.

Key shots:

Artist Identity

Artist name will be playing an important role in the project. Due to the nature of the genre that had been set in the brief, I've decided to use something short and easy for people to remember.

Here are the most popular names:

J@NE - Read as 'Jane'is an inter textual nugget from the famous 1920's successful feature: 'The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari'. This film is said to be the beginning to the German Cinematographic Impressionism. Jane is the only named female character and she is the love interest of the main character Francis, and his friend Alan. She was also kidnapped by Cesare.

KAR:N - Read as 'Karen'

μ/se - Read as 'Muse'. Although the name was positively received, there is an idol group that goes by the name μ's, which is very similar to my idea. To avoid complications, I have decided not to use that name.

Poll result:

 Name
Votes
 μ/se
4
 J@NE
3
 KAR:N
5
 Jasper
2
 Bohemia

In the end, I've decided to go with 'KAR:N' as it was the most popular option amongst people surveyed.

Universal Records Labels Research

Through my own research I have identified that The Universal Music is a conglomerate organisation, with many labels under the name Universal Music Group. To make sure that I have targeted my audience I have done further research on some of the subsidiaries. Here are three that I have thought would be the most suitable for my artist:

Name: Abbey Road Studios
Genre: The studio is not restricted to a specfic genre.
Artists under the label's name: Kate Bush, Radiohead, Oasis, Kanye West, Amy Winehouse, Kylie and Muse to Sam Smith, Florence + The Machine, Ed Sheeran, Frank Ocean, Lady Gaga and Adele.
Successes: The Abbey Road Studios label is one of the most successful labels in the world.
Limitations: Although it is very successful, the label does not have any genre restrictions which can make targeting an audience harder.

Name: SPINNUP
Genre: independent
Artists under the label's name: T.O.N.I., Nugat, Valencé, AE Mak
Successes: This label specialises in promoting independent and small artists
Limitations: Since it is a small label, the promotions used are restricted to conventional platforms such as Spotify or Apple Music, which is not very reliable for promoting an artist to a niche audience.

Name: Astral Werks Records
Genre: Dance
Artists under the label's name:Halsey, Sia, David Guetta, The Chemical Brothers,  Marshmello
Successes: The label specialises in promoting (successful) artists of the same genre as specified in my brief.
Limitations: There is a limited amount of artists signed up to this label, so the genre that the studio specialises  in can be interpreted differently.

In the end I have decided that Astral Werks Records label is the most suitable label for this project and the brief set. I will use the Astral Werks logo on my artist page as a result.
